Beyond expressing a view, these option positions can act as insurance for the wider portfolio.
The reason is how an option behaves. A share moves one-for-one with its name — if it falls, the book falls with it. An option is different: what it can lose is capped at its cost, while what it can gain gets disproportionately larger the harder the market falls. That asymmetry — cheap to hold, outsized when things break — is what makes it a hedge.
Held deliberately alongside the rest of the book, these positions cost little in calm markets and pay off when a sharp drawdown hits — offsetting losses elsewhere instead of adding to them. This is a property of the instrument, described here as a mechanism, not a performance claim.
